On Tuesday, Jan. 2, the US Mint will ship 2024 Reverend Dr. Pauli Murray quarters to Federal Reserve Banks and coin terminals for circulation. This coin is the first of five quarter designs for the year and the eleventh in the American Women Quarters™ Program by the U.S. Mint.
Maya Angelou, Dr. Sally Ride, Wilma Mankiller, Nina Otero-Warren, and Anna May Wong are among the personalities who will be recognized at the commencement of the four-year series in the year 2022.
Bessie Coleman, Edith Kanakaole, Eleanor Roosevelt, Jovita Idar, and Maria Tallchief were honored in the 2023 quarters, which continued the celebration of American women's achievements and services. The 2024 quarters commemorate Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray, Patsy Takemoto Mink, Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, Celia Cruz, and Zitkala-Ša.
The tails side of the quarter has Murray's eyeglass-framed visage spelling out "HOPE," signifying his belief in hope-based social changes. Her poem "Dark Testament," which calls hope "A SONG IN A WEARY THROAT," is incorporated into the design. Artistic Infusion Program Artist Emily Damstra created and Chief Engraver Joseph Menna sculpted the picture.
A portrait of George Washington appears on the obverse (heads side) of each program quarter. More than ninety years ago, on the occasion of Washington's bicentennial, artist Laura Gardin Fraser created this portrait.
Those quarters that are designed for circulation are made in the production facilities of the United States Mint, which are located in Philadelphia and Denver respectively.
One roll of quarters minted at the San Francisco Mint is included in the three-roll collection, which makes them even more rare and special than the ones struck in Denver and Philadelphia.
Ida B. Wells, Juliette Gordon Low, Dr. Vera Rubin, Stacey Park Milbern, and Althea Gibson will be honored with quarters for the year 2025, which will be the final coins produced under the program.
